How to Make Being Sustainable Affordable

Being sustainable in fashion on a budget doesn’t have to be a daunting task. There are ways to make being sustainable affordable!

Are you used to High Street Prices?

It’s understandable that shoppers accustomed to high street prices may find it challenging to justify the higher costs associated with sustainable brands. I can relate to this sentiment myself. Brands like Topshop, River Island, Asos, and New Look have been go-to options for many of us, where paying around £50 for a dress seemed reasonable.

However, the idea of spending £150 for less then a dress can make us shudder inside! Especially in today’s uncertain times when people are more conscious of their spending habits.

Sustainable Can Be Expensive

It’s crucial to acknowledge that sustainability often comes at a higher price due to the use of innovative materials and factors like ethical sourcing, fair wages, and environmentally friendly production processes. While it may seem daunting at first, there are still ways to make eco-conscious choices without breaking the bank.

How to Make Being Sustainable Affordable

Revamp, Reuse, and Recycle can indeed become your motto for maintaining sustainability at a lower price point.

By adopting this motto, you can reduce your environmental impact while keeping sustainability affordable. Remember, it’s the small choices and conscious efforts that make a significant difference in our collective journey towards a more sustainable future. So revamp, reuse, and recycle with pride.

Reuse and Restyle

First and foremost, embrace the power of reusing and restyling. Take a thorough inventory of your wardrobe and rediscover hidden treasures that you may have forgotten about. Mix and match different pieces to create fresh and exciting outfits.

Experiment with accessories like belts and ties, layer up, or tuck in shirts to give old garments a new lease on life. Not only is this option completely free, but it also encourages us to appreciate and utilize the clothes we already own.

I also advise you check through your wardrobe at least twice a year!

Have you ever heard of the saying getting my winter or summer clothes out? Well its a saying we need to implement into our lives. Having a look through all your clothes ready for the warmer months and the same in winter, will not only remind you of clothes you have forgotten about, but also open up new possibilities for outfit combinations that you hadn’t considered before. It’s like shopping in your own closet! So, make it a point to regularly assess your wardrobe, and you’ll be surprised at the creative outfits you can put together without spending a penny.

Play a part in Recycling and Buy Second Hand

Don’t overlook the wonders of second-hand shopping. By opting for second-hand, you’re not only saving money but also giving these clothes a new purpose and extending their lifecycle.

Vinted

Platforms like Vinted have become a go-to destination for finding pre-loved clothing at significantly reduced prices. You’ll be surprised to find that many popular items originally found on high-end retailers can be snagged for a fraction of the cost.

I recently had party to attend and I was desperate to wear a sequin skirt I had found on Asos! The skirt was £70, Which was more than I wanted to spend on it. So I went to Vinted! Vinted has become my go to. Usually if it is on ASOS it is on vinted! True to form I found the skirt in my size at £20. The wearer had worn it once and I saved £50!

The skirt was a one time wear skirt maybe 2 at a squeeze, if you’re the type who prefers not to be seen in the same outfit twice, then great put it on Vinted and make some money back! Plus someone else will get to wear it once or maybe they will get more wears. Reducing Waste and Recycling at the same time!

Charity Shopping and Thrift Stores

Charity shopping is another avenue worth exploring. Thrift stores are often filled with hidden gems waiting to be discovered. Not only will you find unique and one-of-a-kind pieces, but you’ll also be supporting charitable causes in the process. It’s a win-win situation that adds a touch of sustainability to your wardrobe while contributing to a greater good.

Revamp or Repair

Lastly, learning to sew can be a game-changer in your sustainable journey. By acquiring basic sewing skills, you can unleash your creativity and transform your existing wardrobe. Don’t think of old clothes as disposable items but rather as potential fabric waiting to be repurposed into something new and exciting.

By upcycling and altering your garments, you can create unique pieces that reflect your personal style while reducing waste. Subscribe below to keep updated as we will be expanding on our DIY section to help you in this area!

Rent

Rent wasn’t included in my motto above, but at least it starts with an R!

This trend has gained popularity in recent years, allowing you to wear designer or high-end pieces for a fraction of the retail price.

Instead of splurging on an expensive dress that you’ll only wear once or twice, renting allows you to enjoy the outfit without the long-term commitment. It’s a cost-effective way to access stylish and sustainable fashion without breaking your budget.

Being Sustainable Doesn’t have to be Expensive

By incorporating these strategies into your shopping habits and fashion choices, you can embrace sustainability without compromising your budget. Remember, small changes can make a big difference, both for the planet and your wallet.
