Wagamama and PANGAIA are Opening New Doors for Sustainability!

The intersection of fashion and sustainability has witnessed a unexpected collaboration, between wagamama, the UK-based restaurant chain renowned for its Asian cuisine, and PANGAIA, a pioneering materials science company. By repurposing old uniforms and using cutting-edge technologies to create new ones, Wagamama and Pangaia are redefining the boundaries of eco-friendly design and circular economy practices.

A Shared Vision for Sustainability

Since it first opened it’s doors in 1992, Wagamama has been guided by the Japanese philosophy of “kaizen” meaning Change for the Better or Continuous Improvement. This commitment has extended beyond their culinary excellence to them taking an holistic approach to sustainability. Through initiatives like a 50% plant-based menu and eco-friendly packaging, Wagamama has consistently strived to minimize its ecological footprint and inspire positive change.

Pangaia, on the other hand, has been a leader in the realm of eco-friendly design since 2018. Through their ground-breaking innovative materials and scientific advancements, Pangaia have revolutionized the fashion industry. Fabrics derived from pineapple waste and nettles to lab-grown alternatives for palm oil, Pangaia are well known for pushing boundaries with sustainable fashion.

The Birth of a Collaborative Journey between Wagamama and Pangaia

Recognizing the need for sustainable uniforms, Wagamama embarked on a collaborative venture with Pangaia. The result was a collection of sleek, slow-fashion uniforms aptly named “Wagamama, powered by PANGAIA.” This collaboration not only prioritized reducing the brand’s eco footprint but also the employees looked stylish while staying eco-friendly.

The collection is inspired by streetwear aesthetics, building upon Wagamama’s previous successful collaboration with renowned designer Michiko Koshino in 2019. Pangaia’s expertise in inclusive design and sustainable innovations perfectly align with Wagamama’s commitment to environmental consciousness.

The Sustainable Uniforms by Wagamama and PANGAIA

The “Wagamama, powered by PANGAIA” collection embodies simplicity and sustainability. The uniforms are crafted from organic cotton, cultivated without the use of pesticides. To further enhance their eco-friendliness, the garments are treated with PPRMINT™, a plant-based peppermint oil that neutralizes bacteria, reducing the need for frequent washing.

This combination of organic materials and innovative treatments creates a shift in the textile industry, setting new standards for the integration of environmental consciousness with a sleek design.

Real Team Members as Models

In the spirit of inclusivity, Wagamama and PANGAIA assembled a diverse cast of real team members to showcase the new collection. Through a nationwide casting call across all 180 restaurants, the collaboration celebrated the unique identities and contributions of Wagamama’s employees.

Renowned photographer Kaj Jefferies captured the essence of the redesigned uniforms both in the kitchen and in the studio. This fusion helped bring the collaboration to life.

Old Clothes into Limited-Edition Hoodies

It doesn’t stop there! Wagamama and Pangaia embarked on a further initiative by transforming the old uniforms from Wagamama’s into limited-edition hoodies, co-designed with Pangaia.

The scheme encourages Wagamama team members to dig into their closets and return their old t-shirts. In exchange, team members have a chance to win a Wagamama x Pangaia hoodie. The returned t-shirts will then be repurposed into unique hoodies, which will be available for purchase in 2024.

A Circular Economy in Action

To celebrate this latest collaboration, wagamama partnered with the design project, Greater Goods. Greater Goods specializes in creative and eco-friendly projects that utilize reclaimed, damaged, or unwanted products. Together, they hosted upcycling workshops, showcasing the environmental and creative potential of a circular economy.

These workshops served as a platform to continue repurposing Wagamama’s old uniforms and transforming them into new and exciting products. Further extending Wagamama’s journey into sustainability!
