The Knotty Ones is a fashion brand that combines sustainability, craftsmanship, and social responsibility to create unique and ethically-made knitwear. Founded by Akvilė, Danutė, and Sandra, The Knotty Ones began with a shared vision to honour their Baltic heritage and empower women artisans in rural Lithuania.
Sustainability
The Knotty Ones is a brand that does things a little differently. With a commitment to sustainability and zero waste, they ensure that every piece of their handmade knitwear is created with intention and purpose. Instead of mass-producing their garments, The Knotty Ones only makes what they know they’ll sell, reducing waste and minimizing their environmental impact. This approach may mean less profit for the brand, but it guarantees that they never have leftovers.
They use natural and 100% biodegradable yarns, to create beautiful garments for your wardrobe, also using plastic-free buttons and compostable packaging. Minimizing their impact on the planet every step of the way.
Ethical Practises
The Knotty Ones believe in the power of ethical fashion, by supporting independent female artisans and collaborating with female-founded factories in rural Lithuania. They provide these talented women with employment opportunities, and empower them with financial independence. They ensure fair working conditions, living wages, and weekends off
Why Wednesday Loves
What sets The Knotty Ones apart is their unique Knitter’s Dream Fund initiative. While they pay all of their knitters a living wage, they also go above and beyond by helping them achieve their personal goals. This level of support and appreciation is something rarely seen in the industry. Unlike shopping on the high-street, where you can’t directly thank the women behind your clothes, The Knotty Ones gives you the opportunity to personally thank your knitter. When checking out, you can choose to add an extra donation, which goes directly towards your knitter’s goal, whether it’s driving lessons, learning a language, or booking a vacation.
Brief History
The story of The Knotty Ones began when Akvilė, Danutė, and Sandra met at grad school in 2011. Growing up in Lithuania, they were immersed in a culture where handmade knits by grandmas and aunties were a cherished tradition. Their shared love for sustainable fashion led them to create a brand that honours their Baltic heritage while making a positive impact. Today, The Knotty Ones employs over 70 female artisans in rural Lithuania, providing them with financial independence and a voice within their families and communities.
