Lucy and Yak – Sustainability with Every Step

Lucy and Yak make sustainable clothing that will withstand the test of time. They have carefully constructed a method to create organic sustainable clothing that can be resold again and again. They encourage you to return your old “Yaks” in return for a voucher, whilst creating a Facebook page for customers to trade sell, and buy second-hand “Yaks”. Lucy and Yak also have an in-house seamstress to attend to their upcycled garments. However! Lucy and Yak are more than just sounding good on paper!

Sustainability

Lucy and Yak are GOTS-certified. A third-party certification program, like GOTS, ensures truly organic and ethically sourced fabric. From Design to Purchase. They use recycled polyester, they take care in making sure that their polyester is made from recycled plastic, after finding that some companies use new bottles contradicting the recycled process.

They offer a breakdown of all the fabrics they use and who it is made to provide their customers with clear transparency. They use recycled polyester, Lenzing Ecovero (a type of viscose fabric), Fashion waste, Linen, Bamboo, and Hemp

Lucy and Yak offer a buy back scheme where you can return any unwanted Lucy and Yak purchases and in return you will receive a voucher up to £20 to spend in store or online.

Ethical Practises

Lucy and Yak Support a charity called Fior Di Loto that helps to provide education for poor girls in villages around Pushkar, India. The charity’s mission is to provide a better education for these girls, empowering them to build a brighter future for themselves and their communities.

One of Lucy and Yaks future goals is based on diversifying their staff. They feel strongly about hiring a diverse team and support anti-race work. They support charities like Black Minds Matter and Loveland Foundation. They believe that the problems we face with race does not have a destination, but is a journey that they are open to learning and growing.

Lucy and Yak also feel it important to focus on the wellbeing of their staff, by offering them flexible working hours. Which they have also moved to a 4-day working week, with office staff being in the office for 2 days and at home for 2 days.

Brief History

Starting in 2014 Lucy and her partner brought a Van and travelled, whilst selling vintage clothes on Depop to earn a living. This spurred creative ideas which led them to design and create. In 2017 they launched their first product a dungarees after making 30 and selling out they made more all whilst working in their parent’s basement and their story begins. From the offset they wanted their brand to be kind and fair, to use organic or recycled materials, and provide comfort to their wearers. They have their story beautifully displayed on their website which is worth the look.
